Auto > Minimum Levels

Your state may have specific requirements for auto insurance coverage. In some states, you cannot register your car without proving that you have liability insurance, though in others, you don't have to prove you're insured until you get into an accident or get a ticket.

Only five states do not require that you have liability coverage, but all the rest do and they have minimum levels set of how much liability coverage you have to purchase.

Reading liability limits

There are three numbers in liability limits. The first is the bodily injury liability maximum for one person injured in an accident. The second is the bodily injury liability maximum for all the injuries in a single accident. And the final number is the property damage liability maximum for a single accident.

For example, Alabama's liability minimums are listed as 20/40/10 in the table below. This means that you must have $20,000 for injury liability per person, $40,000 for all injuries, and $10,000 for property damage.
